New Delhi: A new chapter in Indian T20 cricket has begun, with Shreyas Iyer named captain of Team India’s T20I squad for the upcoming tours of Ireland and England. The squad announcement has triggered major discussion across cricket circles, with fresh faces, leadership changes and notable omissions becoming the biggest talking points.
The headline inclusion is 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who has earned his maiden senior India call-up after a breakout IPL campaign. His selection marks one of the boldest youth moves in India’s recent T20 planning, as selectors appear to be looking towards the next generation ahead of future global tournaments.
Iyer’s appointment as T20I captain comes after a strong leadership phase in franchise cricket and a renewed push for stability in India’s middle order. His elevation also signals a change in direction, with Suryakumar Yadav no longer leading the side for this assignment. Tilak Varma has reportedly been named vice-captain, giving the squad a younger leadership core.

However, the biggest debate has come around Rajat Patidar’s continued absence. Patidar, who scored 312 runs in IPL 2025 and 501 runs in IPL 2026 while playing a key role in Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s back-to-back IPL title wins, has once again missed out on a T20I opportunity. His omission has sparked strong reactions from fans, many questioning what more he needs to do to enter India’s T20 setup.

Supporters of Iyer have pointed to his role as a reliable middle-order batter and calm tactical presence, while others believe his appointment may only be a short-term move. Some cricket observers have suggested that Shubman Gill remains the long-term captaincy candidate for the 2028 Olympics and future T20 World Cup cycle, making Iyer’s role a possible transitional phase.
Senior journalist Kushan Sarkar’s reported remark that Iyer may not last long in the T20 format has further fuelled discussion, especially at a time when India’s T20 plans appear to be moving towards youth, flexibility and multi-format leadership options.
