Vijay Turns 52: From Tamil Cinema’s ‘Thalapathy’ to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister

Must Read

Chennai: C. Joseph Vijay, the actor-turned-politician who reshaped Tamil Nadu’s political script in 2026, turned 52 today, marking his first birthday as Chief Minister of the state.

Born on June 22, 1974, in Madras, now Chennai, Vijay’s journey has been anything but ordinary. For nearly three decades, he ruled the Tamil box office as “Thalapathy,” winning a massive fan base through romance, action, dance, dialogue delivery and that unmistakable screen presence which could make theatres sound less like cinema halls and more like election rallies.

Today, that fan energy has moved from first-day-first-show celebrations to the political stage.

Vijay, founder and president of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, made a historic political debut in the 2026 Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly election. TVK emerged as the single-largest party with 108 seats, ending the long-standing dominance of the DMK and AIADMK in the state’s political landscape. With support from allies and smaller parties, Vijay was sworn in as Tamil Nadu Chief Minister on May 10, 2026.

The milestone gives his 52nd birthday added significance. What was once a day of fan club posters, welfare events and cinema hashtags has now become a political occasion watched closely by supporters, opponents and governance observers alike.

Vijay began his film career as a child actor in the 1980s before making his debut as a lead actor in Naalaiya Theerpu in 1992, directed by his father S. A. Chandrasekhar. His early popularity came through romantic dramas such as Poove Unakkaga, Kadhalukku Mariyadhai, Thullatha Manamum Thullum and Kushi.

The 2000s transformed him into a full-fledged action star. Films like Thirumalai, Ghilli, Thirupaachi and Pokkiri helped build the mass-hero image that later became central to his public identity. By the 2010s, films such as Thuppakki, Kaththi, Theri, Mersal, Sarkar, Bigil, Master and Leo turned Vijay into one of Tamil cinema’s most bankable stars.

But Vijay’s political messaging was not born overnight. Through several of his later films, he frequently played characters fighting corruption, injustice, corporate exploitation and social inequality. The screen hero who questioned power eventually became a politician asking voters for a chance to govern.

His social welfare organisation, Vijay Makkal Iyakkam, founded in 2009, acted as a bridge between fan culture and public service. The organisation carried out welfare activities across Tamil Nadu and later became the foundation for his political mobilisation.

In February 2024, Vijay formally announced his entry into politics and said he would step away from cinema. TVK was projected as a secular, egalitarian alternative to Tamil Nadu’s established Dravidian parties. His final stretch in cinema, especially the anticipation around Jana Nayagan, added emotional weight to his transition from superstar to public representative.

The 2026 election result turned that transition into a watershed moment. Vijay contested from Perambur and Trichy East, winning both seats before retaining Perambur. His rise brought comparisons with earlier actor-politicians in Tamil Nadu, but also came with a distinct generational shift, powered by youth voters, fan networks and anti-establishment sentiment.

On his birthday, wishes poured in from political leaders, film personalities and fans across social media. For supporters, the day is a celebration of a leader who moved from cinema screens to the Chief Minister’s chair. For critics, the real test begins not with applause, but with administration.

At 52, Vijay stands at the most challenging phase of his public life. The man who once delivered punch dialogues now faces policy files, coalition pressures, Assembly debates and the everyday demands of governance.

The box-office numbers are no longer the scoreboard. Roads, jobs, education, healthcare and public trust are.

For Tamil Nadu, Vijay’s birthday is not just a celebrity celebration anymore. It is the birthday of a Chief Minister whose second act may prove even more dramatic than his first.
