Gwalior, 27 September 2014: Urban bodies and Mayors should have uniform rights all over the nation because in Madhya Pradesh there are self-sustaining urban bodies and Mayors have a lot more rights while in many other states Mayors have very little authority and in many places they have less tenure. In view of this Mayors should prepare proposal and I will stand side by side with in Central and bring the matter to the appropriate forum. These were the words of Minister of Mines, Steel, Labour and Employment Narendra Singh Tomar at two-day 107th All-India Council of Mayors executive committee meeting held at Hotel Adityaz, Gwalior. He expressed the words as chief guest of the event.
Program was chaired by Higher Education minister and National General Secretary of All India Council of Mayors Association Umashankar Gupta, Vice President of the All India Council of Mayors special program Sameeksha Gupta, Indore Mayor Krishna Murari Moghe, Amritsar Mayor Bakshi Ram Arora, Gwalior MLA Jaibhan Singh Pawaiya, Moderator Brijendra Singh Jadon, Former Mayor Raghunath Paaprikar, Bharatbhushan Bhargav, Vivek Narayan Shejwalkar, Municipal Commissioner Ajay Gupta were present.
Tomar urged Mayors to actively participate in Swachh Bharat campaign by PM Narendra Modi from 2 October. He also said that rather then seeking money from Central Government or State Government, urban areas should be put on increasing revenue as income. He said in present times Indore Municipal Corporation charges Rs. 275 crore as property tax whereas Gwalior Municipal Corporation charges only Rs. 22 crore which is very less, Municipal Corporation should concentrate in increasing income.
At the meeting, decisions were confirmed for meeting which will be held at Ahmedabad on 24 February 2014. Members introduced themselves at the meeting. Resolution was also adopted to meet PM Narendra Modi and Minister of Urban Development, Venkaiah Naidu for equal right of Mayors and civic bodies.
